Amber's survival of Encephalitis

On Amber's Fourth Birthday she came down with Encephalitis. Encephalitis is an infection on the brain caused by a virus. Noone knows what causes this but their is now as of 1986 medicine to stop the infection. She was in a coma for Three days, and in the Hospital for a month, and had to learn how to walk and use the bathroom all over again. It has been Two years since then and she is doing very well. Long term effects include, short term memory, personality change, and hard to control seizures. The statistics of this terrible illness is One in every 50,000 people get it, but it is believed to more common than that. Alot of cases go unreported. So if you or a loved one or someone you know is post-encephalitis please help get the word out about this terrible illness by making sure their case is reported. The most important symptom of this illness is extremely high fever. Symptoms usually appear within a week or two of the original infection which can be a flu-like illness or apparent gastro-intestinal upset. The symptoms which set encephalitis apart usually include "altered consciousness" due to the direct involvement of the brain. These symptoms include confusion and drowsiness, high fever and are followed in severe cases by seizures and coma. Prompt diagnosis and hospitalisation is important, as is prompt treatment with a drug like Acyclovir. This is an anti-viral agent effective against the herpes simplex (cold sore) virus which is the commonest known cause of encephalitis in this country. Investigations undertaken in hospital should include a CT or MRI scan which will show the extent of the inflammation and a lumbar puncture (unless cerebral pressure is too high). Treatment will often include anti-convulsants to control seizures and possibly steroids. Intensive care with ventilation may also be required in severe cases, particularly if there is concern that brain swelling may be leading to a rise in pressure inside the skull. If you have any questions please feel free to email me. I have written a poem which was published by The National Library of poetry. I would like to share it with you.

That was my Child That was my Child, nor cradle nor grave That was my Child, her life I must save That was my Child, her little body so frail That was my Child, "Dear God, where did I fail? That was my Child, to wait was all we could do That was my Child, this only happened to few That was my Child, I wanted to hold her so tight To breath on her own was too much of a fight That was my Child, it was near impossible to leave her side But then one day her eyes open wide That was my Child, not expected to completely recover But she walked out of the Hospital and into my arms her Mother Now this is my Child, there's not much she can't do Taking advantage of good health without realizing we all do I feel so lucky having Two healthy Children I love taking that extra few minutes to hug and love them.
